Program Overview

At the Adaptive Strength Association of British Columbia, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the physical and emotional benefits of strength training, regardless of their abilities or circumstances. Our Adaptive Strength Program is designed to help individuals gain strength, discover effective modifications for their unique needs, and build the confidence to advocate for themselves in any fitness environment

Who We Serve

Our program is currently open to individuals who face physical challenges that require adaptations for strength training, particularly those with permanent impairments resulting from conditions like spinal cord injury, limb differences, a neurological condition, or similar circumstances. While we focus on those with lifelong physical impairments, we welcome anyone who feels this program aligns with their needs and goals. Our aim is to provide a safe, inclusive space where participants can feel supported and confident to reach their full potential.

  • Build functional strength tailored to your body’s capabilities.
  • Develop a foundation of fitness to enhance your daily life and overall health.

Find Individual Modifications:

  • Work closely with our experienced coaches to discover exercises and techniques that work for your body.
  • Learn how to adapt traditional movements to suit your needs, ensuring both safety and effectiveness.

Build Confidence and Self-Advocacy Skills:  

  • Develop the skills to clearly express your needs in any gym or training setting.  
  • Learn practical strategies for working with trainers, gym staff, or workout partners to create a welcoming and inclusive fitness experience.  

What to Expect

  • Individualized AssessmentsEvery participant begins with a private 1-on-1 comprehensive assessment to understand their unique goals, strengths, and challenges. This will also give you a chance to see the facility and make a game plan if any particular accommodations are required. 
  • Customized Training Modifications: Each client receives a personalized approach to the program tailored to their abilities, goals, and preferences.
  • Ongoing Support: Our team provides guidance and encouragement throughout your fitness journey, helping you track progress and overcome obstacles.
  • Inclusive Environment: We foster a judgment-free, welcoming space where you can feel comfortable exploring your potential.
  • Strategy Session: A final 1-on-1 meeting with your coach gives you the opportunity to reflect on your progress, review your achievements, and discuss strategies for continuing your strength training beyond the program.

By participating in this program, you’ll not only enhance your physical abilities but also contribute to a movement that champions accessibility and equity in fitness.

Program Details:

  • This program is currently limited to 8 participants to ensure lots of space for movement
  • Group classes will run on Fridays from 2-3:30pm - start date of the drop in program will be announced soon! (Mid-March 2025)
  • Sessions will all take place at Wild + United Athletics (823 McPhee Avenue, Courtenay, BC)
  • Support people or animals are always welcome to accompany you to any meetings or workouts
  • You will book your first private meeting using the booking link provided. If you are unable to make any of the given times work, please email us and we'll find a solution!
  • If you attend regularly, you will have the opportunity to book a private strategy session with your coaches every 6 weeks.

Please Note:

If you’d like to visit the space before committing to the program, you’re welcome to drop in Monday–Thursday between 8am–6pm or Friday between 8am–4pm. Keep in mind that our lobby can get busy at the top of the hour when classes transition, so arriving a few minutes past the hour is ideal for a chance to chat with our front desk team and look around.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY READINESS QUESTIONNAIRE

By signing below, the above-named participant agrees that they can honestly answer the following statements with a "No" or if any of the below questions have been answered with "Yes", Participant represents and confirms with the Released Parties that they have since been cleared by a doctor and approved for physical activity.


  1. Has your doctor ever said that you have a heart condition OR high blood pressure?
  2. Do you feel pain in your chest at rest, during your daily activities of living, OR when you do physical activity?
  3. Do you lose balance because of dizziness OR have you lost consciousness in the last 12 months?

Please answer NO if your dizziness was associated with over-breathing (including during vigorous exercise).

  1. Have you ever been diagnosed with another chronic medical condition (other than heart disease or high blood pressure)?
  2. Are you currently taking prescribed medications for a chronic medical condition?
  3. Do you currently have (or have had within the past 12 months) a bone, joint, or soft tissue (muscle, ligament, or tendon) problem that could be made worse by becoming more physically active? Please answer NO if you had a problem in the past, but it does not limit your current ability to be physically active.
  4. Has your doctor ever said that you should only do medically supervised physical activity?

I have read and understand this release and agreement and agree to its provisions. I am not under their influence of any drugs, alcohol, or other intoxicants. I confirm am not suffering from any mental illness or incapacity.


I further understand that this Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire is included and forms part of the Waiver of Liability, Release and Indemnity that follows and that my signature below indicates I have read, understand and answered the above questions to the best of my knowledge and belief.

Waiver of Liability, Release and Indemnity
(“Release and Waiver”)

To: Wild + United Athletics Inc. (“Wild + United”) and Adaptive Strength Association of British Columbia (“ASA”) and their owners, directors, officers, employees, contractors, agents, heirs and assigns, as applicable (collectively, “Released Parties”).

In consideration of participating in the fitness training services provide by Wild + United and ASA, including, but not limited to individual and group strength and fitness training, yoga, martial arts and other fitness related activities (collectively, the “Services”) and in using the premises, facilities and/or equipment, if applicable, I, the undersigned, acknowledge and agree as follows:

Acknowledgment of Risk

I acknowledge that there are inherent risks and dangers in participating in the Services, including, but not limited to
(i) minor injuries such as scratches, bruises, muscle aches, soreness and sprains; (ii) major injuries such as joint or back injuries, bone breaks, eye injuries or loss of sight, heart attacks and concussions; and (iii) catastrophic injuries including paralysis or even death. I understand that the description of the risks in this Release and Waiver is not complete.

Voluntary Assumption of Risk
I voluntarily choose to participate and assume all risks and dangers of my participation in the Services, including all risks of injury, physical or financial loss and even death that may result from participating in the Services, even if
the risks are created by the carelessness, negligence or gross negligence of any of the Released Parties or any other third-party. I further understand that I am aware of my own capabilities and limitations and am solely responsible for my own actions and inactions and have the autonomy to decide whether I should or should not continue to participate in the Services.

Representation and Warranty

I represent and warrant that I am aware of the physical demands of the Services and that to the best of my knowledge, I am physically and medically able to participate in the Services. I acknowledge and agree that Wild + United and ASA reserves the right to refuse my participation participate in any or all of the Services, if they believe my participation would put themselves, any Released Parties, participants or other third-parties at risk, in their sole discretion.

Release, Waiver, and Indemnity

I hereby release, indemnify and save harmless the Released Parties from any and all responsibility, liability, claims, actions, suits, costs, loss, expenses and damages arising directly or indirectly from my participation in the Services
to the fullest extent permitted, including financial damages or personal injuries, however caused, including negligence. I further indemnify the Released Parties from any costs, damages or expenses, including legal fees, they may incur as a result of defending any claim made by me or on my behalf. This Release and Waiver shall be effective and binding upon my heirs, next of kin, executors, administrators, successors, assigns and representatives as applicable. This clause survives indefinitely.

Limitation of Liability

If for any reason the Released Parties are found liable for damages arising directly or indirectly from this Release and Waiver, liability will be limited to the greatest extent possible in the governing jurisdiction and in no case exceed the amount of any fee I have paid to Wild + United or ASA.

Severability

If any of the provisions of this Release and Waiver are found to be invalid, illegal or unenforceable, the validity, legality and enforceability of the remaining provisions will not, to the extent permitted by law, in any way be affected and will remain enforceable.

Governing Law and Jurisdiction

This Release and Waiver is governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada where applicable. Any disputes arising directly or indirectly from this Release and Waiver will be submitted and heard exclusively in the courts of Courtenay, British Columbia.

Counterparts and Electronic Signing

This Release and Waiver may be signed electronically and/or in counterparts that, when taken together constitutes a fully signed and legally binding agreement.

I CONFIRM I AM AT LEAST 19 YEARS OLD AND THAT BY SIGNING THIS PARTICIPANT ACTIVITY READINESS QUESTIONNAIRE AND RELEASE AND WAIVER I AM ASSUMING CERTAIN RISKS AND WAIVING CERTAIN LEGAL RIGHTS WHICH I MAY HAVE AGAINST THE RELEASED PARTIES.

OR

I CONFIRM I AM THE PARENT OR LEGALLY APPOINTED GUARDIAN OF THE PARTICIPANT NAMED BELOW WHO IS A MINOR. I HAVE THE LEGAL AUTHORITY TO REPRESENT AND BIND THAT PERSON AND CONFIRM I AM AT LEAST
19 YEARS OLD. I AM AWARE THAT BY SIGNING THIS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY READINESS QUESTIONNAIRE AND RELEASE AND WAIVER I AM ASSUMING CERTAIN RISKS AND WAIVING CERTAIN LEGAL RIGHTS WHICH I AND/OR PARTICIPANT MAY HAVE AGAINST THE RELEASED PARTIES.
